Alright, so it’s not exactly a cycling related sign but I took the picture when I got lost cycling around Schoodic Point in Maine.
Oh man. I just love the graphic of the stick person slipping into the water. And that water is C-O-L-D. Trust me, you don’t want to fall into the North Atlantic. No es bueno.
Also to clarify, Maine’s coast consists of large boulders, the “beaches” are GORGEOUS. Click here if you want to see even more pictures of my cycling adventures in Maine.
And trust me, those sea gulls at Schoodic Point would make off with your infant if they thought the child was edible. The sign warned you ahead of time! Beware of the gulls!
Today’s street sign of the day is a slight deviation from the norm – this is about FAIL signs!
While riding around the city of Los Angeles, I often feel that the city planners not-so-secretly want to kill off cyclists by placing signs in the most inappropriate places. So.. you are trying to tell me, by putting a sign with a bicycle on it on Melrose, that as a cyclist, I can bike on Melrose? And do what… die? get doored? hit a hipster? Yeesh.
In the picture to the right, it’s pretty apparent that there is a need to kill the cyclists. What if there is oncoming traffic? They will have to stop. And I am embarrassed to say but I’ve hit one of those types of poles before. No fun.
At least there is some equal opportunity hate here. Cars go splashy, bikes get to cross the bridge in peace. I agree heartily with this sign. Don’t get me wrong, I own a car, but I really hate driving. And my car hates me, too. The engine light came on AGAIN last night. I JUST PAID $700 TO FIX YOU LESS THAN THREE WEEKS AGO! EFF YOU CAR!
The picture on the right is not a street sign, but I have a feeling this ‘sign’ would get more attention than the boring yellow things on the side of the road. I’ve seen interesting debates about wearing shirts with ‘messages’ for motorists and how it would just piss off motorists more. What do you think? Yay or Nay on wearing shirts (or in this case, no shirt) with messages for motorists?
Have any pictures of FAIL street signs, especially as it applies to pedestrians/cyclists?
AKA Street Sign of the Day: 6
The other day I was biking in the valley, which is over 15 degrees hotter than where I live. That is good, though – I need to start biking in evil dry heat to toughen myself up for the death valley century in the fall.
I looked on MapMyRide.com earlier and saw a nice 20 mile loop from Topanga Canyon to Kanan Rd., the entire way on Mulholland Highway. Great! Hills, canyons, great!! I need to do more climbing.
Alas, I didn’t get out there till 6 PM, but hey, sunset at 8 PM. Even with major hills, I can do this in two hours. No problem.
Well. Let me tell you – there were problems. I will list them out in chronological order, as well as the solution.
- Rocks everywhere on the road. Why? Because, as the multiple signs indicated, the area was all rock slide territory. Rocks the size of my fist and bigger, everywhere.
- After biking forever, I found myself half mile from Kanan, at the bottom of my friend’s street. It was 15 miles! Not 10!
- I was almost out of water. I go through two bottles of water every 20 miles. Therefore, not enough water to get home.
- Called friend, acted passive aggressive and didn’t want to inconvenience him (he was still at work)
- Biked five miles back, realized I would not get back before the sun set, and there were NO street lights on the canyon roads
- Got off bike, texted friend an SOS. Continued to bike.
- Knight in Shining Armor (aka Kyle) showed up. Had nice cold Mexi-Coke (Coca Cola from Mexico, which means it has real sugar)
- Knight in Shining Armor drove my a$$ back to my car (ten miles away). Yes. I got SWEPT. SWEPT!
Ultimately, I DID do 20 miles! My originally intended ride. Sigh.
Here is a collection of rock slide images I found online, and probably saw a few of today. None of the ones I saw today had a cow.
Ever bike on a road covered in ‘death cookies’ (rocks)? Ever seen a variant of this sign, ignore it, move on ahead, then regret it??
OK! I didn’t crop this image because I wanted everyone to see the palm tree on the left hand side.
You know what that palm tree means? It means this picture was probably take in California. Hell, let’s pretend it was in Los Angeles. I would LOVE to see this sign in person.
I 100% guarantee if I stood by this sign for less than an hour, I would see at least 3 cyclists (ones probably not wearing helmets) CONTINUE on the WRONG way. Probably on the side walk. Possibly on a beach cruiser.
There appears to be a fascination with going against traffic, on a side walk, with no helmet (or light on their bike, if it’s at night) in the fine metropolis of Los Angeles.
Though I will be honest – I was walking across the street the other day to window shop at Nordstrom Rack when I saw a sign in front of me that said ‘Use Crosswalks’, with arrows in direction of the cross walk. I continued to walk right by the signs, and over to the shops. AND I WALK ON GRASS WHEN TOLD NOT TO.
But that does not invalidate this sign – when you bike on the WRONG side of the street, on the sidewalk, motorists in America DO NOT look to their right when poking out of a driveway, k? This ain’t England.
Fed up of cyclists on the sidewalk? or do YOU bike on the sidewalk? Best be defendin’ that position, friend.
OK So there are a few things I love about this sign:
1. I bet people in cars think this is targeted to remind CYCLISTS to share the road
2. I bet people on bikes think this is targeted to remind DRIVERS to share the road
3. The bike is pacing the car
4. We needed to be reminded there are laws in place concerning the road
5. No helmet on the cyclist
6. For a stick figure, the cyclist has a nice butt
I bet the cyclist is thinking: Goddamn car. Move ON or move OVER, a$$hole! Don’t you see the sign? WE SHARE the road! I am a vehicle too!
The car is thinking: Goddamn bike. Why don’t you go bike on a bike path? Or drive a car instead?
By the way, this sign is part of a new sharrows effort in Cincinatti.
What do you think bike / car is thinking? Got a street sign you want to share – post the url in a comment!
